DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING
Developmental editing occurs early on in a manuscript's development (hence, "developmental" editing). A developmental edit is useful for manuscripts that still require some help when it comes to structure, plot, pacing, and character development. This type of edit focuses on big-picture items, not details like punctuation and grammar.
What you'll get: A manuscript with in-text comments detailing specific items to consider in big-picture edits, along with a separate document going over specific feedback for revisions.
Rate: $55/hour
PROOFREADING
Proofreading happens once a manuscript is typeset and is in PDF format. Proofreading typically focuses on small grammar and punctuation errors along with layout and formatting inconsistencies.
What you'll get: A complete proofread using PDF markup tools to call out changes.
Rate: $0.02-$0.03/word + $55/hour for additional revisions*
All rates are based on the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) rate page. These are calculated from averages across the industry from real editors and designers. I base my individual rates on the amount of experience I have in each area along with the unique requirements of each project.
COPYEDITING
Copyediting is what most people think of when they hear "editing." Copyediting is useful for manuscripts that are developmentally sound but require revisions based on punctuation, grammar, structure, and conciseness. A copyedit might often reveal areas that need more revision and often includes questions for considering how to clarify certain areas.
What you'll get: One pass of copyediting with in-text comments and revisions using Track Changes and a personalized Style Guide.
Rate: $0.02-$0.03/word + $55/hour for additional revisions*
TYPESETTING
Typesetting takes a manuscript from Microsoft Word and transforms it into a PDF ready for print. Typesetting takes into account the author's vision for style and can take several revision.
What you'll get: Two to three interior mockups to begin. After finalizing a style, a complete PDF will be provided. After proofreading (if using), a final clean PDF along with an ePub of the required specifications will be provided if requested. All final and working files will be provided upon completion.
Rate: $55/hour
*Additional revisions includes work such as another pass of editing or review of new material added post-editing.
